Restorative yoga leads the practitioner towards a host of wonderful benefits that balance perfectly the more dynamic yoga styles.

During restorative class, longer-held, restful poses that are fully supported with cushions, blankets and blocks, either seated or lying down, guide the body to achieve a level of high quality rest that profoundly soothes, reboots and regenerates all the body’s systems at a cellular level.

The poses open the body with gentle stretching but allow for complete access to yielding to a fully relaxed state – unwinding any muscular tensions, releasing the joints, calming the nervous system, allowing free blood-circulation by counter-acting the effects of gravity, all accessed by guiding the breath to a slower pace and using a variety of softer breathing techniques (pranayama). These techniques can be taken off the mat and woven into daily life.

The body needs activity and stimulation that we encompass in our busy lives - but it can often be the case that we do not permit ourselves to balance this activity with true rest. Restorative yoga practice slows down the pace of life. Slower movements and stillness allow space for a unique and deep experience of posture and breath at a slower natural tempo. This permits body and mind to gain expanded awareness of and connection to the body and the mind and a deep sense of embracing relaxation and calmness in both the physical and mindful aspects of ourselves – resting easy in every breath and every moment.

You will feel beautifully calmed, lighter and refreshed after your restorative class!

Amanda also integrates essential oils into each class. They are used in oil burners to diffuse aromas suited to the theme of each week’s postures to create a deeply relaxing environment in which to practice the Art of Rest.

This class is appropriate for all students seeking the benefits of a very relaxing, gentle, and nourishing practice. The combination of gentle hatha and deep restorative work improves range of motion and joint mobility while reducing pain and the effects of stress. No prior yoga experience required.
